Report from the September meetingThe September meeting of the Auckland Watercolour Society held in the Glenfield Hall, Hall Road. We watched a DVD of Robert Wade the Australian watercolourist ... what an artist? Gavin Fletcher said he was recognised as the "Doyen of watercolourists" Gavin is not wrong - Robert Wade made everything look so simple with as few strokes of the brush as he could manage and the brushes he used? Well ... they looked like house painting brushes ... and what results he got? After the DVD came the critique on this month's challenge, "the Islands of the South Pacific" and there were plenty of paintings to talk about (see them elsewhere in the newsletter). The format of the critique was a little different - Gavin asked the artist "why this particular subject and what would the artist do differently if the artists were to paint the subject again?" Gavin also asked the audience "what would they do to perhaps enhance the painting or to make it stand out" some very interesting concepts were put forward. The next meeting is on Monday 13th October commencing at 1pm the challenge for October is "a window with broken glass and cobwebs" - there should be some good paintings of that subject? -- JM |
