Next meeting

March:: Beach scene focusing on the middle field full of life, joy and colour. Our Auckland beaches are full of wonderful inspirational painting scenes. (Please ensure that your painting has a matt surface so that we can take a picture for the newsletter.)

In the second issue Jan/Feb 2014, there is an urgent appeal to artists to present articles about themselves and their work.

It is important that members respond positively to this as it is a very easy way of promoting themselves and the art of water colour painting. Jackie Pearson has a recent work on the front cover and an article (3 pages )in it with many works included. An excellent start.

Chairman's Column

By now the Christmas holidays are long forgotten and you are looking forward to another very active year. Planning your 2014 portfolio is well advanced and opportunities for exhibiting are on the calendar.

So it is for the AWS. Our year is going to be very busy.

Our February meeting got us off to a great start with a tidy profit being made from the sale of a mountain of watercolour materials. Thanks to Chris Ashton for taking the initiative. It was an honour to have our President Brian Millard with us and give the encouraging comments to members who brought their interpretation of "tools of trade". David Szeto's presentation was a surprise to us all . His attention to detail reflects his former life as an architect. Thanks to Ken Garrett for spying him out for us.

Current and Upcoming Exhibitions

AWS Exhibition 2014

Our first exhibtion of the year will be held at the Takapuna Public Library commencing on Monday 7th April 2014 and will run for three weeks until 27 April 2014.
The idea for this exhibtion was inspired by the terrible time the Philippines had recently - and to that end we are giving the International Red Cross the proceeds from any sales from the exhibition. We will have a speaker from the Red Cross on the opening night and 20% of sales will be donated to the International Red Cross. There will be no charge to hang your work and indeed donating the 20% is not compulsory - it is a good cause so we expect the exhibition to be well supported.

Ponsonby Crusing Club Exhibition

The Ponsonby Crusing Club will have its Inaugural Art Exhibition this year in May. Opening night will be on 6 May. Amanda Brett is artist in Residence, great news for the watercolour community.

AWS Merit Awards 2014

The Auckland Watercolour Society Merit Awards exhibition will be at the Takapuna public Library, dates will be announced in time.
