Our speaker at the August meeting was Brian Millard – one of New Zealand’s leading watercolourists.
Brian introduced himself by telling us how he and his partner Marilyn (also an artist) had decided to leave Auckland and go down to Arrowtown to try life as artists earning their living by selling paintings in the summer months and teaching in the winter months. The home they built had an art gallery and a teaching room built in, and whilst the economy was fairly good life, though at times precarious, was good enough for them both to make a living doing what they enjoyed most – painting.
Brian took us through a series of photos of his work – explaining the techniques he used and the colours he favoured to get the results we could see in the photos. Most if not all of the photos he showed us were of sold works.
Brian also did the critique for the “homework” which for this month was “boats/yachts in a marina” - Brian critiqued each painting honestly and was very helpful with his comments and hints for better paintings. - JM
